Tim was at the computer yesterday evening, looked over and there she was! She got out of her latched and weighted-down tank, crawled out of the snake room/garage and came to the slider. Hard to believe a few months ago she was almost dead.

For those of you that haven't heard Alex's story;
She was brought to us by a family that couldn't get her to eat regularly and she was constantly sick. We had told this family two years previously not to buy a snake from a specific local breeder as he has horrible husbandry practices and we knew the clutch Alex came from. 75% of Alex's clutchmates were born with no eyes. She is somewhere between 6-8th generation linebred. She was in such bad shape when we got her, at three years old, she was 8 feet long and 9 pounds. She had an enlarged heart, a chronic respiritory infection and her liver was failing. Up until a few months ago, she wasn't able to eat on her own. For an entire year she was tube fed and force fed low sodium chicken hot dogs. She finally started taking rats again and while she'll never be back to what a "normal" burmese should be, shes going to pull through.

Wow...it's amazing that such a sad tale has a happy ending! Alex looks pretty well fed now, and is obviously strong enough to escape from her tank. I can only imagine the time, work, and worry that was involved in nursing her back to health. It must have been wonderful to see her take food on her own for the first time. Kudos to you for helping her, and thanks for sharing her story!

Aw. Thank you guys! Thats sweet.

When we first started her trips to the vet, Dr. Jack said, "Well, shes in really bad shape. I'm not going to recommend anything, but I wouldn't blame you at all if you wanted her put down. But I have a feeling thats not an option for you."
I told him, "If shes going to die, she'll die at home where shes loved and she'll go knowing we did everything we could for her. She hasn't given up so I'm not about to give up on her. If Spirit wants her, he's going to have to fight me for her."

A year later, and look at her now!

Medical care is only one ingredient in the task of restoring a pet to health. The other one is giving the animal the will to live. I believe that sick pets draw strength from the determination and compassion of their owners.

Euthanasia, though appropriate in some cases, is always a last resort when there's no hope left. Alex is living proof that you made the right decision for her. Bless you!
