Wild bird behavior?

Okay, this has my curiosity peaked, so I figured, who better to come to than the experts.

Mom puts out bird feeders and lays out a lot of seed for the wild birds we have around here. For the last four days, one of the Mourning Doves (don't know if its male or female) frequently comes down and every time, it has the same little twig in it's mouth. I know the twig isn't lodged or stuck in it's mouth, because it occasionally puts it down to eat, mess with a squirrel or chase off the one Scrub Jay that comes down. But it goes straight back and picks up the same twig, and walks around with it, flies away with it in it's mouth, and comes back with it later.

I know doves aren't known to be the brightest crayons, but what on Earth is up with this crazy bird??

Did you know the Mourning Dove used to be called th Carolina Pidgeon? Any way when doves make a nest it'sa the boy thar picks up th twigs and sticks and gives them to the female to build the nest . They are poor nest buildrs. But why he would have the same twig is any ones guess .It's not usual behavior unless he just had that stick and hadn't given it to the momma bird yet. They will steal another birds twigs from their nest and he might have just stolen it and wasn't giving it back.

It is also called th Turtle Dove also known as the Rain dove.. Also the most hunted bird , more doves are shot on North America than any other game bird. Up to 11 million os so shot per year.I used to hunt birds when I was young.

Yes birds are alot like some people,you dont think of them like that but t5hen you never know what a bird brain is thinking. Hence the name 'Bird Brain' lo0l.

Thanks for the input, Tom. Its been amusing watching this little guy strut around with the same twig and chasing off the other wildlife. Atleast I know now its just because he's being a weirdo. LOL
