| Jenny, my RES, has been gravid. I took her out into the yard yesterday to see if being outside would encourage her to lay her eggs. I sat beside her throughout the whole process, which took a few hours. It was fascinating to watch, and amazing that she knew instinctively exactly what to do without having to attend labor and childbirth classes, LOL. Excavating the nest area (it took FOREVER for her to get it just the way she wanted it!) Laying an egg Positioning the egg in the nest cavity Covering up the nest Pulling grass back over the area When she was finished, you couldn't even tell where the nest had been Whew! I'm ready for a nap! This shows the size of her eggs. She laid nine of them! Sadly, they're all infertile since she doesn't have a mate. | |

| Thats amazing, Ginger! What are the odds you could be right there to actually watch her do this??She is such a beautiful girl and what great "Mama instincts" she has! So is she completely done now for the season? | |

| I sat beside her and talked to her all the while she was nesting. She's such a sweet turtle.
After I took her back inside, I palpated her to see if she had laid all her eggs, and I could feel at least two more! I was hoping she had laid them all, but no such luck.

Has Phsyco ever laid eggs? If so, how many did she lay at one time? It's probably a good thing that Jenny's eggs aren't fertile. After watching them hatch, I could never give any of the babies away. Pretty soon I'd have more turtles than you do, LOL!

| This is the first year I've taken Jenny outside to lay her eggs. Before that, I made nesting boxes for her but she wouldn't use them. She just dragged dirt all over the house and ended up laying her eggs in the tank. But not all at once...oh no, that would be too easy! She laid a couple at a time, days apart. And like your turtles, she and her Painted tankmate would start eating them before I saw them, making an awful mess in the water. I'd have to clean the tank, and then a few days later she'd lay some more...so I'd have to clean the tank again. Taking her outside to lay her eggs was so much easier; I don't know why I didn't think of it before...duh!! | |
