Here's the newest member of my family, a 2 year-old female cockatiel named Tinkerbell. Her previous owner couldn't tolerate her whistling. (Duh...that's what birds do! If you don't like noise, get some fish.) I've been a reptile person for many years; this bird business is a whole new game to me. She's a sweetheart, though. I tie open her cage door in the morning so she can go in and out as she pleases. She's flown a few times, but hasn't learned how to navigate through the house yet and usually ends up landing on my head, LOL.

Tinkerbell thanks all of you for the compliments! I felt like I HAD to rescue her. Her previous owner tired of her vocalizing, stuck her cage in a bedroom and kept it covered up. No life for a bird! I've only had her for a couple of weeks, but she's already training me. If she wakes up before I do (which is most of the time), she whistles until I uncover her and open her cage door so she can get out. I also tie open the door where her feed cup goes in, so she can eat from outside the cage.

I understand that hens aren't talkers, but can they be taught to whistle a tune? I'm working with her on that.

If you ar lucky a female can talk but they mostly whistle and sometimeslearn very basic words but nothing like the males.. A male can teacdh a female to talk if they are in the same cage. We gave my grandaughter a female a while ago and it just whistled . But we just gave her a male that was a great talker and it is all ready teaching the girl a fw words so they can talk but not as good as the boys. b6
